Peering into Avian Influenza A

This article describes the 2014 emergence of influenza A(H5N8) in South Korea among domestic poultry and wild waterfowl, with the subsequent first human infection in Astrakhan Oblast, Russia, which was not clinically symptomatic and without human-to-human transmission. The authors examine the epidemiology of H5N8, zoonotic transmission mechanisms, reassortment, and methods to prepare for the spread of influenza A viruses.
