135 Deciphering the Callbox Analyzing Necessary Factors for Effective Radio Communication

Sullivan, N.M., Juhl, E., O’Connell, F., et al. (2019). 135 Deciphering the Callbox: Analyzing Necessary Factors for Effective Radio Communication. Annals of Emergency Medicine. 74(4):S54.
The authors used open-source recordings of emergency medical services (EMS) radio communications to analyze whether the communication was effective in preparing emergency departments for patients’ arrival. They concluded that roughly one third of EMS radio communications were ineffective, and half did not convey the patient’s vital signs or stability. Including vital signs improved the odds of effective communication. Finally, the authors call for the development of a standardized framework for EMS radio communications.
