Evacuation and Health Care Outcomes Among Assisted Living Residents After Hurricane Irma

Hua, C., Patel, S., Thomas, K., et al. (2024). Evacuation and Health Care Outcomes Among Assisted Living Residents After Hurricane Irma. JAMA Network Open. 7(4): e248572.
Evacuating from assisted living (AL) facilities can stress residents’ health, as noted in this comparison study of more than 25,000 Florida residents (split by those who evacuated and those who did not) after Hurricane Irma. For example, authors found that AL residents who evacuated experienced greater risk of emergency department visits and nursing home stays compare to those who did not evacuate.
