Serology and Cytokine Profiles in Patients Infected with the Newly Discovered Bundibugyo Ebolavirus

Gupta, M., MacNeil, A., Reed, Z., et al. (2012). Serology and Cytokine Profiles in Patients Infected with the Newly Discovered Bundibugyo Ebolavirus. Virology. 423(2):119-124.
The authors studied diagnostic samples from 44 laboratory-confirmed cases of Bundibugyo ebolavirus. They found deaths were associated with high levels of viral antigen, low levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and high levels of immunosuppressor cytokines. Unlike other Ebolavirus species, they found high levels of inflammatory cytokines leading to septic shock did not cause deaths in the Bundibugyo patients.
