Emerging Infectious Diseases. 31(12):2297-2301.
The authors sequenced genes from clinical specimens of human cases in Washington state infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. They found the virus cross-reacted well with existing candidate vaccine viruses and did not show changes associated with mammalian adaptation, increased infectivity, or transmissibility among humans.
