This brief provides a short overview of autism and the challenges associated with having autism (particularly as one ages into adulthood) and caring for someone with autism (e.g., stress associated with determining interventions, education, and levels of care). The authors list program guidelines for respite care for children (e.g., use of redirection and rewards, clear directions, and prompts) and adults (e.g., independent living skills, social or recreational skills). Links to related resources and federal, state, and private funding sources are provided throughout.
