Mass Shootings and Rural Areas

On November 5, 2017, a gunman opened fire in the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs (TX), killing 26 and injuring 20. While most of the wounded were taken by helicopter or ambulance to the closest Level 1 trauma center in San Antonio, some were brought to Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville first. Mandi Sralla was the director of this facility’s emergency department at the time of the shooting and shared her experiences with ASPR TRACIE.
